जय गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान।
कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान॥
अर्थ: माता पार्वती (गिरिजा) के पुत्र, समस्त कल्याण के मूल स्रोत और परम बुद्धिमान भगवान श्री गणेश जी की जय हो। भक्त अयोध्यादास प्रार्थना करते हैं कि हे प्रभु! आप मुझे निर्भयता का वरदान दीजिए।

(चालीसा चौपाई)
जय गिरिजापति दीनदयाला। सदा करत सन्तन प्रतिपाला॥ १ ॥
अर्थ: माता पार्वती के स्वामी और दीनों (गरीबों/दुखियों) पर दया करने वाले भगवान शिव की जय हो। आप सदा ही अपने संतों और भक्तों का पालन-पोषण करते हैं।

भाल चन्द्र सोहत नीके। कानन कुण्डल नाग फणी के॥ २ ॥
अर्थ: आपके मस्तक (भाल) पर चंद्रमा अत्यंत सुंदर सुशोभित हो रहा है और आपके कानों में भयानक फन वाले साँपों के कुंडल सजे हुए हैं।

अंग गौर शिर गङ्ग बहाये। मुण्डमाल तन छार लगाये॥ ३ ॥
अर्थ: आपका शरीर अत्यंत गोरा और दिव्य है, आपके शीश (जटाओं) से पवित्र गंगा जी बह रही हैं। आपके गले में मुंडों की माला है और आपने पूरे शरीर पर भस्म (छार) लगाई हुई है।

वस्त्र खाल बाघम्बर सोहे। छवि को देख नाग मुनि मोहे॥ ४ ॥
अर्थ: आपके शरीर पर बाघ की खाल के वस्त्र (बाघंबर) सुशोभित हैं। आपके इस अद्भुत और दिव्य रूप को देखकर नाग और मुनि-ऋषि भी मोहित हो जाते हैं।

मैना मातु की हवे दुलारी। बाम अङ्ग सोहत छवि न्यारी॥ ५ ॥
अर्थ: मैना माता की लाडली पुत्री (माता पार्वती) आपके बाईं ओर (बाम अंग) विराजमान हैं, जिससे आपकी यह संयुक्त छवि अत्यंत सुंदर और अनोखी लगती है।

कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी। करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥ ६ ॥
अर्थ: आपके हाथों में दिव्य त्रिशूल सुशोभित है, जो आपके शत्रुओं (और मनुष्य के भीतर के काम, क्रोध, लोभ आदि विकारों) का सदा नाश करता है।

नन्दि गणेश सोहैं तहँ कैसे। सागर मध्य कमल हैं जैसे॥ ७ ॥
अर्थ: आपके पास विराजमान नंदी जी और गणेश जी ऐसे सुंदर दिखते हैं, मानो विशाल समुद्र के बीच में सुंदर कमल खिले हों।

कार्तिक श्याम और गणराऊ। या छवि को कहि जात न काऊ॥ ८ ॥
अर्थ: कार्तिकेय जी और गणों के राजा श्री गणेश जी के साथ आपकी यह दिव्य छवि इतनी अलौकिक है कि इसका वर्णन वाणी से नहीं किया जा सकता।

देवन जबहीं जाय पुकारा। तबहीं दुख प्रभु आप निवारा॥ ९ ॥
अर्थ: जब-जब देवताओं पर विपत्ति आई और उन्होंने आपको पुकारा, तब-तब हे प्रभु! आपने तुरंत प्रकट होकर उनके सारे दुखों को दूर किया।

किया उपद्रव तारक भारी। देवन सब मिलि तुमहिं जुहारी॥ १० ॥
अर्थ: जब तारकासुर राक्षस ने स्वर्ग में भारी उपद्रव मचाया, तब सभी देवताओं ने मिलकर आपकी शरण ली और आपसे रक्षा की गुहार लगाई।

तुरत षडानन आप पठायो। तारक मारि जनमुक्ति दिलायो॥ ११ ॥
अर्थ: देवताओं की प्रार्थना पर आपने तुरंत अपने छह मुखों वाले पुत्र कार्तिकेय (षडानन) को भेजा, जिन्होंने तारकासुर का वध कर देवताओं को मुक्त कराया।

शरण कल्पतरु आप कहाये। सदा सेवकन मनवांछित फल पाये॥ १२ ॥
अर्थ: आप अपनी शरण में आने वालों के लिए कल्पवृक्ष (मनचाहा फल देने वाले पेड़) के समान हैं। आपके सेवकों ने सदा आपसे मनवांछित फल प्राप्त किया है।

शशि ललाट मुख परम विशाला। नेत्र तीन छवि मन्द हसाला॥ १३ ॥
अर्थ: आपके ललाट पर चंद्रमा है, मुख अत्यंत दिव्य और विशाल है। आपके तीन नेत्र हैं और आपके चेहरे पर सदा एक मंद, शांतिपूर्ण मुस्कान रहती है।

विषपान कीन्ह तहीं जबहीं। नीलकण्ठ तब नाम कहाये॥ १४ ॥
अर्थ: जब समुद्र मंथन के समय भयंकर विष निकला, तब संसार की रक्षा के लिए आपने उसे पी लिया, जिससे आपका कंठ नीला हो गया और आप 'नीलकंठ' कहलाए।

पूजन रामचंद्र जब कीन्हा। जीत के लंक विभीषण दीन्हा॥ १५ ॥
अर्थ: जब भगवान श्रीराम ने लंका विजय से पहले आपका पूजन किया, तब आपकी कृपा से उन्होंने रावण को जीतकर लंका का राज्य विभीषण को सौंप दिया।

सहस कमल में हो रहे धारी। कीन्ह परीक्षा तबहिं पुरारी॥ १६ ॥
अर्थ: जब श्री राम सहस्र (हजार) कमलों से आपकी पूजा कर रहे थे, तब हे त्रिपुरारी (शिव)! आपने उनकी भक्ति की परीक्षा लेने के लिए एक कमल छिपा दिया।

एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई। कमल नयन पूजन चह सोई॥ १७ ॥
अर्थ: जब एक कमल कम हो गया, तब कमल के समान नेत्रों वाले श्री राम ने अपना एक नेत्र ही आपके चरणों में अर्पित करना चाहा।

कठिन भक्ति देखि प्रभु अनकूला। प्रगट भये हर हरन शूला॥ १८ ॥
अर्थ: श्री राम की ऐसी अटूट और कठिन भक्ति को देखकर आप तुरंत प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हो गए और उनके सारे संताप व कष्टों को हर लिया।

दीन दयाल सब दुःख टारे। शरणागत के काज सँवारे॥ १९ ॥
अर्थ: हे दीनों पर दया करने वाले प्रभु! आपने सदा ही अपने भक्तों के सारे दुःख टाले हैं और अपनी शरण में आने वालों के बिगड़े काम सँवारे हैं।

स्तुति कीन्ह बसिष्ट मुनीसा। नारद शारद सहित अहीसा॥ २० ॥
अर्थ: महर्षि वशिष्ठ, देवर्षि नारद, माता सरस्वती और नागों के राजा शेषनाग—सभी आपकी दिव्य स्तुति और वंदना करते हैं।

महिमा तव गाई श्रुति चारी। शेष सहस मुख कहत न पारी॥ २१ ॥
अर्थ: आपके दिव्य गुणों का गान चारों वेद (श्रुति) करते हैं। हजार मुखों वाले शेषनाग जी भी आपकी महिमा का पूरा वर्णन नहीं कर पाते।

महि महिमा तव गाई पुरारी। अजहुँ जो लौं ध्यान तुम्हारी॥ २२ ॥
अर्थ: हे पुरारी! इस पृथ्वी पर सदा से आपकी महिमा गाई जाती रही है। आज भी जो कोई सच्चे मन से आपका ध्यान लगाता है, वह भवसागर से पार हो जाता है।

जानत नहीं प्रभु रूप तुम्हारा। बुद्धिहीन मोहि पार उतारा॥ २३ ॥
अर्थ: हे प्रभु! मैं आपके वास्तविक और विराट रूप को नहीं जानता। मुझ अज्ञानी और बुद्धिहीन को इस संसार-सागर से पार उतार दीजिए।

भक्तन हेतु सदा दुख सहिया। सदा भक्तन प्रतिपालक रहिया॥ २४ ॥
अर्थ: हे भोलेनाथ! आपने अपने भक्तों के कल्याण के लिए स्वयं कष्ट (विषपान आदि) सहे हैं। आप सदा ही अपने भक्तों के रक्षक और पालनकर्ता रहे हैं।

सदा शिव तुम दुःख नाशक। शरणागत के संकट नाशक॥ २५ ॥
अर्थ: हे सदाशिव! आप दुखों का नाश करने वाले हैं और अपनी शरण में आने वाले मनुष्यों के बड़े से बड़े संकट को मिटा देते हैं।

महाकाल प्रभु काल के काला। सदा करत भक्तन प्रतिपाला॥ २६ ॥
अर्थ: आप महाकाल हैं, यानी काल (मृत्यु) के भी काल हैं। काल भी आपके अधीन है और आप सदा अपने भक्तों की रक्षा करते हैं।

असुर निकंदन संकट हारी। हरहु कलेश प्रभु दुःख भारी॥ २७ ॥
अर्थ: आप दुष्ट असुरों का नाश करने वाले और संकटों को हरने वाले हैं। हे प्रभु! मेरे जीवन के सारे घोर कष्ट और क्लेश मिटा दीजिए।

तुलसीदास प्रभु आस तुम्हारी। हरहु सकल दुःख विपत हमारी॥ २८ ॥
अर्थ: भक्त (या तुलसीदास/अयोध्यादास) को केवल आपकी ही आस (भरोसा) है। हे शिव शंभू! हमारे सारे दुःख और विपत्तियाँ दूर कर दीजिए।

जो यह पाठ करै मन लाई। तापर होत प्रसन्न सहाई॥ २९ ॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी मनुष्य मन लगाकर, एकाग्र होकर इस शिव चालीसा का पाठ करता है, भगवान शिव उस पर अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर उसके सहायक बनते हैं।

ऋद्धि सिद्धि सुख सम्पति पावै। जीव लोक में मुक्ति कमावै॥ ३० ॥
अर्थ: वह मनुष्य इस संसार में ऋद्धि-सिद्धि, सुख और अटूट संपत्ति प्राप्त करता है तथा इस लोक के अंत में मोक्ष (मुक्ति) का अधिकारी बनता है।

जो कोई संकट में जन ध्यावै। संकट काटि परम सुख पावै॥ ३१ ॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी व्यक्ति घोर संकट के समय भगवान शिव का ध्यान करता है, शिव जी उसके सारे संकट काटकर उसे परम सुख प्रदान करते हैं।

पाठ करै चालीस बारा। सो जन छूटे संकट भारा॥ ३२ ॥
अर्थ: जो कोई चालीस दिनों तक या चालीस बार इस चालीसा का श्रद्धापूर्वक पाठ करता है, वह बड़े से बड़े कष्ट और बंधनों से मुक्त हो जाता है।

जो जन करे सदा शिव पूजा। ताके सम कोइ और न दूजा॥ ३३ ॥
अर्थ: जो मनुष्य प्रतिदिन नियम से भगवान शिव की पूजा करता है, उसके समान सुखी और भाग्यशाली संसार में दूसरा कोई नहीं होता।

दाता कल्पतरु सदा तुम्हारे। शरणागत के काज सँवारे॥ ३४ ॥
अर्थ: हे भोलेनाथ! आप हमेशा कल्पवृक्ष की तरह दान देने वाले हैं, जो आपकी शरण में आ गया, उसके सारे अटके काम अपने आप पूरे हो जाते हैं।

कहहिं अयोध्यादास कर जोरी। करहु वेग प्रभु विपत हमारी मोरी॥ ३५ ॥
अर्थ: अयोध्यादास हाथ जोड़कर प्रार्थना करते हैं कि हे प्रभु! आप शीघ्र ही मेरी सारी विपत्तियों और कष्टों का अंत कर दीजिए।

(समाप्ति दोहा)
नित नेम कर प्रातः ही, पाठ करै चालीस।
तुम मेरी मनोकामना, पूर्ण करहु जगदीश॥
अर्थ: जो मनुष्य रोज सुबह नियम बनाकर इस शिव चालीसा का पाठ करता है, हे संपूर्ण जगत के ईश्वर (जगदीश)! आप उसकी सारी मनोकामनाएं अवश्य पूर्ण करते हैं।

मंगसर छठि हेमंत ऋतु, संवत चौंसठ जान।
अस्तुति चालीसा शिवहि, पूर्ण कीन कल्यान॥
अर्थ: मार्गशीर्ष (अघन) मास की छठ तिथि, हेमंत ऋतु और संवत 1664 को भगवान शिव की कल्याणकारी स्तुति रूप यह शिव चालीसा पूर्ण हुई।

Meaning: Your divine body is spotlessly fair, and the holy river Ganga flows gracefully from your matted hair. You wear a garland of skulls, and your body is smeared with sacred ash.

Meaning: You look majestic wearing the skin of a tiger (Baghamber). Gazing upon this awe-inspiring and mystical form, even the cosmic serpents and great sages are completely enchanted.

Meaning: The beloved daughter of Mother Maina (Goddess Parvati) resides on your left side, creating a combined divine sight that is uniquely beautiful.

Meaning: The powerful Trishul (trident) looks magnificent in your hand; it constantly destroys your enemies (as well as the inner enemies of ego, greed, and lust).

Meaning: You are Mahakaal, the master over time and death itself. Time bends to your will, and you use that absolute power to shield your devotees from harm.

Meaning: Whosoever remembers or visualizes Lord Shiva during times of intense distress will watch their problems dissolve away, replaced by supreme joy.

Meaning: Anyone who recites this Chalisa forty times (or for forty consecutive days) with total devotion is permanently freed from major lifecycles of debt, fear, and suffering.

Meaning: The individual who integrates the daily worship of Lord Shiva into their routine becomes uniquely peaceful; there is no one as blessed or content as them in this world.

Meaning: You are the eternal giver, standing like a wish-fulfilling tree. The moment a soul takes refuge in you, all their delayed projects and complicated problems clear up smoothly.
