जनक जननि पद कमल रज, निज मस्तक पर धारि।
बन्दौ मातु सरस्वती, बुद्धि बल देदाताारि॥
अर्थ: अपने माता-पिता के चरण-कमलों की धूल को अपने मस्तक पर धारण करके, मैं बुद्धि और ज्ञान देने वाली माता सरस्वती की वंदना करता हूँ।

पूर्ण जगत में व्याप्त तव, महिमा अमित अनन्त।
राम सागर गुन कहत, शरणागत जय जयन्त॥
अर्थ: पूरे संसार में आपकी असीम और अनंत महिमा व्याप्त है। आपका यह भक्त आपके गुणों का गान करते हुए आपकी शरण में है; हे माता, आपकी जय हो।

(चालीसा चौपाई)
जय सरस्वती बुद्धि बल दानी। जय जय जय जय विद्या खानी॥ १ ॥
अर्थ: हे बुद्धि और बल देने वाली माता सरस्वती! आपकी जय हो। हे विद्या की अटूट खान (भंडार)! आपकी सदा जय हो।

करहु कृपा मुनि ईशहिं जैसी। मुखर बुद्धि मोहि देहु वैसी॥ २ ॥
अर्थ: हे माँ! जैसी कृपा आपने महान मुनियों और ऋषियों पर की, वैसी ही कृपा मुझ पर भी करें और मुझे तीव्र व प्रखर बुद्धि प्रदान करें।

दाता ज्ञान महा सुख रूपा। रूप विमल तव अमित अनूपा॥ ३ ॥
अर्थ: आप ज्ञान देने वाली और परम सुख का स्वरूप हैं। आपका रूप अत्यंत निर्मल, पवित्र और उपमा से परे (अनोखा) है।

श्वेत कमल आसन तव राजै। हाथों में वीणा शुभ साजै॥ ४ ॥
अर्थ: आप श्वेत (सफेद) कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं और आपके हाथों में सुंदर व कल्याणकारी वीणा सुशोभित हो रही है।

शीश मुकुट मणि सोहत नीका। मस्तक पर छवि अमित मही का॥ ५ ॥
अर्थ: आपके शीश पर मणियों से जड़ा सुंदर मुकुट शोभा दे रहा है और आपके मस्तक की आभा पूरी पृथ्वी पर अद्वितीय चमक बिखेर रही है।

पहने वसन शुभ्र शुचि धारे। हंस सवारी अतिशये प्यारे॥ ६ ॥
अर्थ: आपने अत्यंत पवित्र, उजले और श्वेत वस्त्र धारण किए हुए हैं। हंस की सवारी आपको अत्यंत प्रिय है और बहुत सुंदर लगती है।

ऋद्धि सिद्धि सुनि तव गुण गाथा। सदा नवावहिं चरनन माथा॥ ७ ॥
अर्थ: हे माँ! आपकी महिमा को सुनकर ऋद्धि और सिद्धि भी सदा आपके चरणों में अपना शीश झुकाती हैं।

जब-जब घोर कष्ट जग छायो। तब-तब मात सहाय सुहायो॥ ८ ॥
अर्थ: जब-जब इस संसार पर अज्ञान या विपत्ति का घोर कष्ट छाया है, तब-तब आपने अपनी दिव्य सहायता से भक्तों का कल्याण किया है।

वाल्मीकि जी थे जब मंदा। तब तुम कीन्ह कृपा अनंदा॥ ९ ॥
अर्थ: जब महर्षि वाल्मीकि जी मंदबुद्धि या अज्ञानी अवस्था में थे, तब आपकी आनंदमयी कृपा ने ही उन्हें ज्ञान का प्रकाश दिया।

रामायण की रचना कीन्ही। विमल बुद्धि तुम उनको दीन्ही॥ १० ॥
अर्थ: आपने ही उन्हें वह निर्मल और अलौकिक बुद्धि दी, जिससे उन्होंने पवित्र महाकाव्य 'रामायण' की रचना की।

कालिदास जी मंद मति थे। तव कृपा ते कीर्ति छति थे॥ ११ ॥
अर्थ: महाकवि कालिदास जी भी प्रारंभ में अत्यंत मंदबुद्धि थे। परंतु आपकी कृपा पाते ही वे संसार में कीर्ति और यश के शिखर पर पहुँच गए।

तुलसी सूर आदि विद्वाना। भये जग विख्यात महाना॥ १२ ॥
अर्थ: गोस्वामी तुलसीदास जी और सूरदास जी जैसे महान विद्वान भी आपकी ही कृपा से संसार में विख्यात और महान हुए।

महा कवीश्वर बुद्धि विशाला। तव कृपा पाये सब काला॥ १३ ॥
अर्थ: संसार में जितने भी विशाल बुद्धि वाले श्रेष्ठ कवि और विद्वान हुए हैं, उन सब पर सदैव आपकी ही कृपा रही है।

निसिदिन ध्यान धरै जो कोई। ताकहं दुःख न कबहूँ होई॥ १४ ॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी रात-दिन आपका सच्चे मन से ध्यान करता है, उसे जीवन में कभी कोई मानसिक या बौद्धिक कष्ट नहीं होता।

जो यह पाठ करै चालीसा। तापर कृपा करहिं गौरीसा॥ १५ ॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी इस सरस्वती चालीसा का श्रद्धापूर्वक पाठ करता है, उस पर भगवान शिव (गौरीश) भी अपनी कृपा बरसाते हैं।

सरस्वती माता की जय हो। बुद्धिहीन जन का भय क्षय हो॥ १६ ॥
अर्थ: माता सरस्वती की सदा जय हो! आपकी कृपा से बुद्धिहीन मनुष्यों के भीतर का सारा अज्ञान और भय नष्ट हो जाए।

(समाप्ति दोहा)
मन्द बुद्धि भी होत हैं, प्रखर बुद्धि तत्काल।
जो ध्यावैं माँ शारदा, मिटै अविद्या जाल॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी माँ शारदा (सरस्वती) का ध्यान करता है, उसका अज्ञान रूपी जाल कट जाता है और मंदबुद्धि मनुष्य भी तुरंत ही तीव्र और प्रखर बुद्धि वाला बन जाता है।
